Reborn

Reborn
by Sarah Steele

my son cried upon entering this side
and leaving the only home he had ever known.
he wailed his plight at blinding light,
this new heavy weight and racing heart rate.
he was scared and hungry, a boy without a country,
certain that he was alone, not freed.
his screams nearly blocked the comfort that rocked
and tried to soothe this inconsolable youth,
that tried to assure him this new life would mature him,
a place with space to breathe and stretch at his own pace
and to become himself full-grown in a way he had never known.

when he was born, my son cried,
and when God saved me,
so did i.

Sarah Steele is a poet and lifelong teacher. These days, that looks like leading her four lively redheads in their Michigan homeschool and engaging with students of all ages in poetry workshops, watercolor classes, nature study, and book clubs. She thrives on community that goes deep and is grounded on biblical truths. Sarah has published two alphabet books with her illustrator husband (yes, also a redhead) and is preparing to publish a poetry memoir about boundary-less living, codependency, debilitating anxiety, and the life-changing effect of a gentle counselor. You can find Sarah’s work on Instagram and Facebook.
